How can I love a place so much but also hate it so much at the same time?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

No wonder all states hate our refugees.

There is much to love about California, but in my experience much of the state’s bureaucracy and politicians are hammers in search of nails. There are some extremely good public servants at the state level, but it varies wildly by department . In terms of politics, it’s kinda troubling that the most skillful and competent state politician in the last 40 years has been a guy best known for tossing people off cliffs in movies and saying, “I had to let him go.”

From what I’ve gathered, there are great driving roads and insane amounts of natural beauty, but everything else sucks.

In the PNW, I call those transplants “Californicators”. They’ve been streaming in for 35 years, bidding up real estate and making traffic worse, while whining about how much better they had it in “Cali”. Many will bemoan that this region has become too much like the CA from which they escaped , while not immediately realizing they are the driving force behind it.

To be fair, 95 decibels is pretty loud.

I am not sure what the law is in Virginia and I am too lazy to look it up, but I don’t really see the issue? Loud exhausts are annoying as hell, generally don’t meet emissions standards and are, for the most part, unnecessary. Getting fined for breaking the law is what the rules are about, right?

I drive a 1987 El Camino about 5000 miles (maybe) a year. I have toyed with the idea of cutouts and straight pipes and generally making the exhaust loud and obnoxious. It currently sounds wonderful at full tilt, but is pretty muted at idle. My guess is it will lead to fines, but that’s the game. You break the rules and if you get caught, you pay the price. I was always kind of surprised I wasn’t ever busted with either of my loud Volvo’s. Guess I got lucky.

What is the alternative? Leave it as it was? Get busted, pay $25, put the stock pipes back on, get it to pass inspection, put the loud exhaust back on, get caught, pay the $25 fine and then run the process through again? Obviously lawmakers thought that charade wasn’t working so now they have made the rules punitive.

honestly I’m of two minds on this. I’ve long felt that defective equipment should be a correctable citation (waived if repaired within the allotted time) while improper/illegal equipment citations should not  be waived even if fixed.  But that should be reserved for coal-rollers and idiots with millions of candlepower of LED lights.

Given how many times I’ve read of people who temporarily swap the stock exhaust back only to get through the re-inspection and think of the fix-it fine as a minor inconvenience, I'm not surprised that the state tightened the screws on it. This doesn't seem as outlandish as other CA regulations surrounding vehicle exhaust equipment, though.

95 dB huh? Well that means everyone at work with a stock GT350, GT3RS and Viper ACR will now be cited with a stock exhaust. Thank god our government is keeping us safe! Never mind there are still plenty of break ins and murders in my city. But hey at least we caught the people with loud exhaust

My friend said the stock exhaust on  his 2018 Camaro is right at the limit in track mode.

There are towns in Arizona with stricter noise laws than that (76-80 dba depending on age of vehicle and speed in Carefree), and they’ve never given you the opportunity to negate the fine. Of course Carefree is populated by retired Californians, so there ya go.

I think the law is in place there just to keep all the Harley riding lawyers and dentists from turning Carefree into Cave Creek.

I’d be screwed if Phoenix or Arizona had such laws, as it would be pretty hard to get my bike down to those levels. Although cops here don’t really give a shit about stuff like that.

A friend of mine in Salinas used to get in trouble with the police over the exhaust on his SRT4, even though it was the factory exhaust.  He figured it was because he spent his teenage years street racing an old Impala.

According to some folks on the internet, a stock Abarth is easily over 95 when revved. It’s possible to drive it below the limit, but someti mes you have to  accelerate.

The dichotomy of the car culture in California has always bugged me. On one hand, you have a huge base of enthusiasts , one of the best place to buy clean cars of any age, and a ton of parts warehouses and fab shops specializing in every brand imaginable. On the other hand, CA has strict emissions laws and vehicle inspections , one of the most dreaded DMV experiences in the US, one of the few (only?) states I am aware of that makes you pay back taxes when you register your out-of-state car, and seems to be openly hostile to the car in general.

I don’t get it.  On the bright side, my garage is full of California rescues... so there is that.  (57% of our cars were CA cars at one point)

That sounds reasonable to me. Go after the improper/illegal equipment violations, like where people have intentionally bypassed or otherwise defeated the equipment in question. But if it’s just something that’s rusting away or damaged by a previous incident, give them the chance to fix the defective equipment first.

I’m going to be the old man here and say “Good!” The apartment complex across the street from my house is littered with dickweeds with illegal exhausts that are constantly causing a racket, and it’s flipping annoying. That and Harleys drive me up the fucking wall.

I had to pay taxes on my 10-year-old car when I moved to Texas . Me anwhile, tax heavy Massachusetts  waives the tax requirement for any car purchased more than 6 months ago. I don’t know the law in NY, but I was impressed that they refunded the prorated portion of my registration fee when I moved away.

Death by a thousand cuts. This won’t be abused at all, I’m sure. There’s a petition against it, already at 134k signatures :

I'm on board. I'm already exempt from emissions and no cop has ever done anything but give me the thumbs up while I'm driving, so maybe they already are?
